In Episode 17 – Word Boy and Code Girl Ride Again – Deena and Mark Rice do what they know.  Deena gives valuable formatting advice, explaining why traditionally taught techniques work well for paperbacks but are fatal to e-books.  Mark shares writing tips and gives the list of books that helped him to hone his craft.  Who says Scotsmen are stingy?  As usual, the intrepid duo veer off on a few tangents, with animal husbandry making its obligatory appearance.  Deena’s Texan drawl is louder than usual, as Mark’s ears are still humming after standing in front of his bastard godfather Lemmy’s bass amp – Murder One – at a Motörhead gig only a few hours earlier.  Sit back, relax, learn and enjoy!

Indie Publishing Podcast – Episode 15:  Gaffer Tape, Kevin Smith & Corporate Bullies

Janet joins Deena & Mark Rice to discuss gaffer tape, Kevin Smith’s talent, the Jay & Silent Bob star’s twitter battle against SW Airlines, corporate bullies and why traditional publishers seem to be imploding. The friends discuss bad writing in all forms of publishing – print, electronic, journalism, etc. Forbes magazine is called out for tarring all indies with the poor-writing tag yet failing to include major publishers in its sweeping statement, despite their history of producing lowest-common-denominator, error-ridden books. Mark takes an eye-for-an-eye approach to Forbes, pointing out that the magazine has zero literary worth, and advising it to stick to what it knows: corporate fellatio. We see Mark’s scary side when he recounts a first date.   Janet updates us on her journey to becoming a published author. Mark really must want to make ‘Die Hard With A Hard-On’, as he’s talking about it again.  Deena laughs at her husband and his nocturnal missions. Listen, laugh and learn.

Indie Publishing Podcast – Episode 14:  Reverend Amber F’ing Norrgard

Poet and author Amber Jerome Norrgard – aka The Right Reverend Amber F**kin Norrgard – joins Deena and Mark Rice to talk about her forthcoming Magnum Opus, revealing why the book took ten years to research and complete.  The concept of writing as catharsis is discussed, with examples given of how writing can be therapeutic in times of emotional conflict.  Amber performs an impromptu marriage ceremony for Deena and Mark, who are only too happy to say, “I do.”  No possums or porcupines were harmed during the recording of the show.

Indie Publishing Podcast – Episode 13: Rocktober and Roll

Deena and Mark Rice are joined by Anne-Marie Klein, author of Behind Blue Eyes: a work of rock fiction inspired by and named after The Who song.  Anne-Marie talks about the 30-year journey of writing, editing and re-editing her manuscript to a state of readiness.  Meticulously researched, the book resulted in The Who’s Pete Townshend sending Anne-Marie a hand-written thank-you note.  Deena discusses the bridge between music and literature, a bridge that both Anne-Marie and Mark helped to build with their rock-themed novels.  All three conspirators confess to hilarious childhood misunderstandings of lyrics by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Kenny Rogers, and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.  Some unlikely-but-true cover versions are unveiled.

Janet Wrenn – B, B and B Podcast regular – interviewed Nicole Flockton as part of her Aspire & Inspire series. Janet asked Nicole how she develops her characters, how she edits and how she got signed with Crimson Romance.  Read this funny and off-beat interview here.

Janet Wrenn – B3 Podcast regular – for her series Aspire & Inspire, spoke with Jason Reinders, author of Terminally Human and Spider Webs. He’s a coffee-holic like much of the writers and thinks that everything would be better with a coffee chaser. Should have asked him if that works for beer too. And of course these two Yankees have to discuss Vikings and Packers – that’s football right? Unless it’s the Houston Texans who cares? Anyway, read her hard-hitting interview here.
